Mobile clinics deliver last-mile reproductive health care in Madagascar

For five months, two mobile clinics covered more than 10,000 kilometers to serve 59 remote localities in seven districts. More than 14,000 people benefited from pre- and postnatal consultations, family planning services, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) screening and treatment and educational sessions.

National ownership of family planning: What do FP2020 commitments have to do with it?

An Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) discusses family planning options with a young couple. ASHAs are trained and supported by Pathfinder International to address special needs of adolescent mothers and young couples, including family planning and healthy birth spacing, to protect maternal health. The likelihood of use of family planning methods is greater when both husband and wife are counseled.

This paper seeks to understand the political economy of commitments and normative best practice within FP national programs, contributing to “stock taking” of change objectives for national ownership and domestic financing of FP programs post FP2020.

The WHO FP Accelerator project supports partners and ministries of health (MoH) to accelerate quality and rights-based family planning (FP) services within the broader frameworks of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the WHO 13th Global Programme of Work (GPW13). The project contributes specifically to attainment of SDG targets 3.1, 3.7 and 5.6, and to the GPW13 goal of 1 billion more people covered by UHC. The WHO-FP Accelerator Project is coordinated by the Contraception and Fertility Care (CFC) Unit in the WHO Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Research (WHO/SRH) and implemented with WHO’s Regional and Country offices.

FP2020 calls for universal access to family planning services

The Imbuto Foundation is a Rwandan organization dedicated to advancing health, education, and youth empowerment. Kamayirese Odette, a nurse, trains two community volunteers: Regis Niyongombwa, age 24, and Dieudone Ufiticyizere, age 23. Regis and Dieudone say the local health center has taught them to speak more openly about sexual and reproductive health topics.
