News and Updates from FP2030

Dear Colleague, As we approach World Contraception Day, FP2030 is thrilled to welcome over 30 new and renewed nongovernmental commitments to the FP2030 partnership.

Dear Colleague,

As we approach World Contraception Day, FP2030 is thrilled to welcome over 30 new and renewed nongovernmental commitments to the FP2030 partnership.

Nongovernmental commitment makers are partners from international NGOs, regional NGOs, the private sector, donors, coalitions, academic institutions, and others that make commitments to FP2030. We partner with these stakeholders to ensure collaboration across sectors, accountability at every stage, and knowledge sharing among partners at every level. Check out our dedicated microsite full of resources and guidance for countries and other stakeholders to make commitments to FP2030.

Over the last several months, FP2030 has been accepting nongovernmental commitments on a rolling basis, beginning with MSI Reproductive Choices announcing the first commitment in July. Since then, we have received six globally focused commitments and more than 25 commitments from national or community-based organizations in a wide range of countries, including Burundi, Nigeria, Uganda, Nepal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The commitments we have received have varied in scope: Some focus on training and educational programs that will reduce knowledge gaps around sexual reproductive health and rights, while others focus on dismantling policy barriers to family planning services.

With renewed dedication and energy to engaging with young people, FP2030 has received commitments from five youth-led organizations, and we will continue to work with these organizations and others to ensure strong and meaningful youth partnership. Additionally, as a part of our commitment outreach efforts, FP2030 has worked to foster partnerships with sectors outside of family planning, including disability rights, the LGBTQIA+ community, and climate change community, recognizing the many intersections between family planning and other development causes. We want to ensure that everyone, no matter their gender identity, physical ability, or ethnicity, sees themselves in the FP2030 partnership.

I’m personally excited to see the family planning sector — and the FP2030 partnership in particular — become more intersectional, and I look forward to working with commitment makers to make sure their commitments are as inclusive and actionable as possible, to spark the most progress in commitment makers’ communities. Is your organization ready to start its own commitment? Check out the commitments toolkit today, and join us this Friday at 9 a.m. ET on Twitter to talk about commitments with four organizations that have finalized theirs: FHI 360, DKT International, Blind Youth Association Nepal, and the International Confederation of Midwives. I hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Sofia Heffernan
Associate, Global Initiatives, FP2030

HAPPY WORLD CONTRACEPTION DAY

For World Contraception Day, we’re celebrating these organizations as they launch their FP2030 commitments. Each of them has pledged to take specific actions to increase use of voluntary, rights-based contraception in their communities. Together, we’re working toward a future where everyone has the freedom and ability to lead healthy lives, make their own informed decisions about using contraception and having children, and participate as equals in society and its development. A few of the organizations we’re celebrating this week:

Blind Youth Association of Nepal (BYAN)

The Blind Youth Association of Nepal (BYAN) is an organization of young people focusing on increasing access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning, for people living with disabilities. BYAN commits to advocating for “the health rights and services of persons with disabilities with a focus on SRHR.” In addition, they commit to advocating for making the provision of contraceptives more inclusive, to meet the demand of people with disabilities. BYAN made a commitment to FP2020 and we are thrilled to continue to partner with them.

FP2030 & DKT International logos

DKT International

DKT International is a global nonprofit organization founded in 1989 to focus the power of social marketing in some of the largest countries with the greatest needs for family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention, and safe abortion. DKT made a commitment to the FP2020 partnership and is building off of that commitment in their FP2030 commitment. DKT commits to generate 400 million non-abortion Couple Years Protection (CYPs) and invest $1 billion of its discretionary resources and sales revenues (invested into product procurement) between 2021 and 2030, among other important goals.

FP2030 & International Confederation of Midwives logos

International Confederation of Midwives

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) supports, represents and works to strengthen professional associations of midwives throughout the world. There are currently 143 Members Associations, representing 124 countries across every continent. In their FP2030 commitment, ICM commits to fostering “a movement for midwifery, enabling and strengthening partnerships, advocacy, and communications for midwifery, with women’s voices at the centre.” With this, they hope to expand the focus areas of midwifery to include education on family planning. Additionally, ICM commits to realizing “an additional 300 midwives in leadership positions and young midwife leaders, making decisions to improve women’s sexual reproductive health and rights.”

FP2030 & FHI360 logos

FHI 360

FHI 360 is an international nonprofit working to improve the health and well-being of people in the United States and around the world. FHI 360 made a commitment to FP2020 in 2012, and the organization will continue to build on that momentum in their FP2030 commitment. FHI 360 commits to a number of meaningful outcomes, including strengthening the measurement and monitoring of equity within FP, researching and developing new contraceptive options, facilitating expanded method choice, and partnering with young people around the world.

We’re hosting a Twitter chat with FHI 360, DKT International, Blind Youth Association of Nepal, and the International Confederation of Midwives to talk about making an FP2030 commitment: why make an FP2030 commitment? No one left behind: has the pursuit of FP2020’s 120 million additional users goal left some women behind?

Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) centered around one shared goal: 120 million additional users of voluntary, rights-based contraception by the end of 2020. As we build the FP2030 global support network, the next phase of FP2020, members of the FP2030 data team examined whether the shared goal of 120 million additional users exacerbated inequalities in family planning programs. Findings from an analysis of 11 FP2020 countries indicated many countries saw MCP gains across different dimensions of equity, and do not suggest a focus on expanded coverage at the expense of equity. As the family planning community continues to look ahead to the next partnership, this analysis can help inform the emerging FP2030 framework, which includes equity as a guiding principle. The High Impact Practices in Family Planning (HIP) Partnership is pleased to announce the release of the updated Pharmacies & Drug Shops brief. An update to the version originally released in 2013, this Service Delivery brief provides evidence-based strategies that can help support drug shops and pharmacies in providing a wider variety of family planning methods and information.

A new strategic planning guide Creating equitable access to high-quality family planning information and services was also released. This document is intended to guide program managers, planners, and decision makers through a process to identify inequities in family planning and interventions to reduce them. The guide was developed through consultation and deliberation with technical experts in family planning and health equity and builds upon the discussion paper on equity in family planning also developed under the Partnership for High Impact Practices for Family Planning.
