The Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN) launched during the 8th Nigerian family planning conference that held in Abuja-Nigeria from the 2-6th of December 2024 is a nonprofit organization dedicated to leveraging private sector resources and expertise to complement the efforts of the Nigerian government and implementing partners, with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes across the nation. Family planning stands as one of PSHAN’s top priorities, as access to family planning services is essential for the overall health and well-being of women and girls.
PSHAN has developed significant expertise in supporting innovative partnerships and creating sustainable financial mechanisms. This includes domestic resource mobilization efforts aimed at addressing the critical shortage of resources in maternal, newborn, and child healthcare systems. By working with various stakeholders, PSHAN is focused on closing gaps in healthcare delivery, ensuring that financial and technical resources are effectively utilized to create lasting impacts.
The organization is mandated to identify opportunities for enhancing value chains in healthcare delivery, ensuring that there is a nationwide understanding of what is required to drive transformative change in the health sector. PSHAN’s commitment to convening and mobilizing private sector organizations is crucial for advancing public-private partnerships (PPPs) in healthcare. These partnerships are essential to addressing Nigeria’s current healthcare challenges, particularly in maternal and reproductive health.
PSHAN’s commitment to improving family planning services is unwavering. Through various targeted initiatives, the organization is leveraging private sector resources and partnerships to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure. By enhancing access to quality healthcare, including affordable family planning services, PSHAN aims to create sustainable mechanisms for reproductive health, ensuring that women and girls across the country have access to the services they need to make informed decisions about their health and future.
Currently, PSHAN is implementing a series of impactful projects designed to make a real difference in the lives of Nigerians, especially women and girls:
- Adopt a Health Facility Project (ADHFP): This ambitious initiative aims to establish world-class primary health facilities in all 774 local government areas in Nigeria over a 10-year period. These facilities will provide integrated health services, including access to quality family planning services, focusing particularly on women, girls, and their families in rural and underserved areas. The ADHFP is set to serve 50,000 individuals annually and impact 30 million women and girls by 2030, contributing significantly to improving maternal and reproductive health nationwide.
- Shaping Equitable Market Access (SEMA) Projects: Through the SEMA project, PSHAN aims to increase the availability of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) products by 40%. This initiative has the potential to benefit 12 million women and girls, while also fostering greater male involvement in family planning decisions. This will help increase male participation in reproductive health discussions by 10%, thereby promoting shared responsibility for family planning.
These projects will collectively reduce maternal mortality rates by 30% in target communities, improve the modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) by 25%, and build the capacity of 2,000 healthcare workers to deliver high-quality family planning services. In addition, PSHAN’s initiatives will reduce stockouts of essential commodities by 50%, improve the nation’s GDP by fostering a healthier, more productive workforce, and enhance male and partner involvement in family planning.
PSHAN’s commitment to the private sector FP2030 initiative represents Nigeria’s first major step toward achieving its FP2030 goals. This commitment is expected to significantly improve healthcare access for women and girls, reducing maternal and child mortality and promoting a healthier, more empowered population. Through these efforts, PSHAN is not only working to meet Nigeria’s family planning goals but also contributing to the broader global movement for reproductive health equity.
