The Voices of Change: LAC and Family Planning podcast by FP2030 LAC Hub, available on Spotify, is a powerful platform amplifying the voices of young leaders, activists, and professionals working to improve sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in Latin America and the Caribbean. Each episode addresses key conversations that explore challenges, personal stories, and innovative solutions within the sexual and reproductive rights landscape, in a region that has historically faced significant barriers. So far, three episodes have been published, each featuring a different guest and theme.
In the first episode, our host Natalia interviews María Paula Martínez, Executive Director of FP2030 LAC Hub. During the conversation, María Paula provides an overview of FP2030’s mission and how the organization is driving efforts to improve SRH across the region. A key topic is the current state of family planning in Latin America and the Caribbean, where challenges such as limited access to contraceptives, cultural and religious barriers, and political obstacles are highlighted. María Paula also delves into the goals of the LAC Hub, which seeks not only to expand access to contraceptives but also to advance broader issues like comprehensive sexual education, gender equality, and youth empowerment.
The second episode, titled Youth and Family Planning, was released in commemoration of International Youth Day. In this episode, we are joined by Ivannia Artola, an 18-year-old youth activist from Honduras. Ivannia shares her experience raising awareness about the barriers young people face in accessing family planning services and information. Among the issues she addresses are limited access to contraceptives, insufficient sexual education, cultural stigmas, and the lack of youth-friendly health services. Ivannia also emphasizes the importance of accurate, accessible information for young people about their sexual and reproductive rights and shares trustworthy resources available to them. This episode not only highlights challenges but also celebrates the resilience and determination of young people in advocating for their rights.
In the third episode, we had the honor of hosting Silvana Resendy, Regional Director of World Vasectomy, who discusses the role of men in family planning, a topic often overlooked. Silvana emphasizes the importance of involving men in these conversations, particularly through methods like vasectomy, which is a safe and effective contraceptive option. Throughout the episode, Silvana debunks myths surrounding vasectomy and highlights how male participation in family planning can promote healthier and more equitable relationships, relieving some of the burden traditionally placed on women. This shift toward shared responsibility can have long-term positive effects on public health and gender equality.
